Dental crowns
What is a dental crown?
When a tooth is badly damaged, the dentist will suggest a dental crown instead of a conventional restoration. A crown is actually a type of prosthesis similar to a “cap”, which is cemented onto the tooth to completely cover it and protect it from further damage. This type of treatment is recommended in the following cases:
- Tooth that has undergone root canal treatment;
- Tooth with a very large filling;
- Broken teeth;
- Tooth whose aesthetics need to be changed due to discoloration, shape or alignment.
Crowns are usually made of porcelain, ceramic or a metal-ceramic alloy. Your dentist will suggest the type of crown best suited to your situation. They are very strong and last at least 10 years. The color of the porcelain that covers the crown will be matched to the color of your teeth, resulting in a perfectly natural aesthetic effect.
